Mahalakshmi Iyer is an Indian playback singer who has over 1000 songs to her credit. She sang portions of the Academy Award winning song “Jai Ho” for A.R. Rahman in the film “Slumdog Millionaire” (2008). Though primarily noted in Hindi and Tamil songs, she has sung in many Indian languages like Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Assamese, Kannada and Malayalam.

Her debut in Bollywood was with Shankar-Ehsan-Loy’s first movie “Dus” in 1997. A.R Rahman’s “Ae Ajnabee” in Mani Ratnam’s “Dil Se” (1998) was her next. Many successful soundtracks like “Mission Kashmir” (2000), “Yaadein” (2001) and “Saathiya” (2002) have been rendered by her voice at the direction of big names like A.R. Rahman, Anu Malik, Jatin-Lalit and others.
Some of her popular songs are “Kabhi Sham Dhale” (Sur-The Melody of Life, 2002), “Har Taraf” (Rishtey, 2002), “Chup Chup Ke” (Bunty Aur Babli, 2005), “Aaj Ki Raat” (Don: The Chase Begins, 2006) and “Bol Na Halke Halke” (Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, 2007).
