- Gangs of Wasseypur is a 2-part film. The fourteen songs in this album are from the first part. Another eleven tracks were released for the second part.
- Sneha Khanwalkar spent more than two and a half years composing the music for this album. Originally from Maharashtra and having grown up in Indore, she travelled to Bihar and Trinidad and Tobago to familiarize herself with the music of the location where the film was set.
- This is Varun Grover's debut film as lyricist. Prior to this, he wrote the song "Laddkhadaaya" for Anurag Kashyap's "That Girl In Yellow Boots" (2011) but the film never had an audio release.

- Hunter - This song is based on a musical genre called Chutney music that was created by Bihari migrants in the Caribbean by combining calypso and Bhojpuri music.
- Keh Ke Lunga - This is the first film song in which Amit Trivedi has sung for a composer other than himself.
- Loonga Loonga - This song is a mashup of Aey Jawanon and Keh Ke Lunga.
